Which smart thermostat is best?
There is no single best one, which is why the comparison above sets them side by side. If you want it to work out your routine on its own, a learning thermostat suits you. If you want to heat one room differently from another, you want a system with smart radiator valves. If you already have a Vaillant boiler, the matched control is usually the tidiest answer. We will tell you which fits your home at the survey, and we have no reason to push you towards one over another.
Will a smart thermostat work with my boiler?
In most cases yes. Smart thermostats work with combi, system and heat-only boilers, including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi, Viessmann, Glow-worm and Potterton. Rather than guess, our engineer confirms compatibility with your specific boiler and wiring at the free survey, before you commit to buying anything.
How much does smart thermostat installation cost in London?
Supplied and fitted, our smart thermostat installations start from £149, and smart radiator valves are from £45 per valve plus fitting. The survey is free. The final figure depends on which system you choose and whether your existing wiring can be reused, and we confirm it before any work starts.
How long does the installation take?
Most installations are finished in under two hours in a single visit. That covers removing your old thermostat or programmer, wiring in the receiver, pairing it to your WiFi and setting the system up on your phone before we leave.
Does the wiring need to be certified?
Swapping heating controls on an existing circuit is not normally notifiable work under Part P in England, which applies mainly to new circuits, consumer unit work and special locations such as bathrooms. The wiring still has to meet BS 7671 and be carried out by someone competent, which is why our Gas Safe registered engineers do it rather than leaving it to a self-install kit.
Do I need WiFi?
Yes. A stable WiFi connection at the boiler and at the thermostat is what lets the system reach the app and gives you control when you are out. If your signal is weak where the receiver has to go, tell us at the survey, because that changes where we site things.
Can I install one myself?
Self-install kits exist, but we would not recommend it. The thermostat is the easy half; the receiver has to be wired into the boiler or the wiring centre, and getting that wrong can damage the boiler or create a genuine hazard. Professional installation also keeps your boiler guarantee intact.
Will it actually save me money?
It can, but be sceptical of any single headline figure, including the manufacturers' own. What you save depends on your home, your insulation, your habits, your existing controls and your tariff. The savings come from heating rooms only when they are used, and a household that already runs a tight schedule will save less than one that heats an empty house every afternoon. We will give you a realistic view of your property at the survey rather than promise you a number.
What happens to my old thermostat?
We remove it and recycle it responsibly as part of the installation, at no extra cost. If your old programmer is wired into a backplate we can reuse, we will, because it makes for a tidier job.
