Smart Thermostats in South London

The most useful thing we can tell you about smart thermostats is that the hard part is compatibility, not installation. Almost every problem people hit with these comes from buying a control online, discovering the boiler wiring does not suit it, and either paying for extra work or sending it back. We check what you have first, free, and that single step avoids most of the trouble.

What you have varies enormously across South London. An interwar semi in Bexley or Bromley with a combi and one heating zone is the simplest possible retrofit, usually an hour's work at the £149 starting price. A large period house in Wimbledon, Dulwich or Richmond has a system boiler, a hot water cylinder and existing zone valves, and needs a multi-zone design to be worth doing at all. A Victorian terrace in Greenwich or Lewisham heats unevenly and benefits more from smart radiator valves than from the thermostat. A new-build flat on a communal heat network may not be compatible with anything on the retail market.

We fit Hive, Nest, tado, Wiser and Vaillant, and we are not tied to any of them. That matters more than it sounds, because these systems differ most in the things people discover later: how many zones they handle, how well they control a hot water cylinder, and what it costs to add valves in two years. The right choice follows your system and how you actually live, not what happens to be in the van.

Compatibility Across the Region

Four system types cover almost everything in South London, and they are the reason the same product costs different amounts to fit.

Combi, Single Zone: The Simple Case

Dominant in the interwar suburbs of Bexley, Bromley, Sutton and outer Croydon, and in most modern flats. The receiver wires in at the boiler, the thermostat pairs wirelessly, and it is about an hour's work. This is the configuration the £149 starting price assumes, and where it applies there are rarely surprises.

System Boiler and Cylinder: Zoning Territory

The norm in the large period houses of Wimbledon, Dulwich, Richmond and Blackheath. Separate heating and hot water circuits, usually with existing zone valves in an S-plan or Y-plan arrangement. Here a single thermostat is the wrong answer and multi-zone control is the whole point, including scheduling the cylinder rather than leaving it on an old timer.

Period Terraces: Valves Matter More

Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark, Lambeth and inner Wandsworth. Solid walls and systems extended over decades produce rooms that never match each other. One thermostat cannot fix that because it only measures one room. Smart radiator valves from £45 per valve plus fitting are what actually deliver even heat here, and wireless controls avoid disturbing period floors and plaster.

Heat Networks: Check Before You Buy

The Greenwich Peninsula, Kidbrooke, Woolwich, Nine Elms and much of the new riverside stock. These flats have a heat interface unit rather than a boiler, and most retail smart thermostats expect a boiler to switch. Some HIUs accept a compatible control and some accept none. This is the single most common wasted purchase we see, and a free check beforehand prevents it.

Smart Thermostats in South London FAQ

Which South London boroughs do you cover?
Greenwich, Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, Kingston upon Thames, Lambeth, Lewisham, Merton, Richmond upon Thames, Southwark, Sutton and Wandsworth. Greenwich, Bexley and Wimbledon have their own pages, because the heating systems in those three differ enough to change the job. We also cover the rest of London and Essex.
How much does a smart thermostat cost fitted?
From £149 supplied and fitted, and smart radiator valves from £45 per valve plus fitting. The survey is free. The final figure depends on which system you choose, how many zones you need and whether the existing wiring at the boiler can be reused, and we confirm it before any work starts.
Will a smart thermostat work with my boiler?
Almost certainly if you have a conventional gas boiler, whether combi or system. The exceptions worth checking are back boilers and older gravity-fed systems, which often lack a modern wiring centre, and flats on communal heat networks with a heat interface unit rather than a boiler, where many controls simply do not apply. We check for free before you buy anything.
Which brand should I choose?
It depends on your system rather than on reviews. We fit Hive, Nest, tado, Wiser and Vaillant, and they differ most in how many zones they support, how well they control a hot water cylinder, and what expanding later costs. In a one-zone flat almost any of them is fine. In a multi-zone house the choice matters a great deal, and we are not tied to a manufacturer.
Do smart radiator valves work with any thermostat?
No, and this catches people out. Valves generally need to be from the same ecosystem as the thermostat to be controlled together, so if you think you may want room-by-room control later it is worth choosing a system that supports it now. We ask about that at the compatibility check rather than leaving you to discover it in a year.
Will it save me money?
It depends on how you run your heating now. If the system is already well scheduled and you never heat empty rooms, expect a modest saving. If it runs on an old timer at one temperature for the whole house, the saving can be substantial, and on a property with a hot water cylinder still on a timer nobody has revisited, larger again. We would rather set a realistic expectation than quote a percentage.
Can you fit it alongside a boiler service?
Yes, and it is worth combining. An annual service is £79 and a smart thermostat starts at £149 supplied and fitted, and doing both on one visit saves an appointment. Tell us when booking so the engineer brings the right control and knows your system in advance.
