Solar Panels in South London

Solar is the one service where the honest answer varies most from house to house, and where the industry is least honest about it. Whether an array is worth installing depends on which way your roof faces, how much of it is unbroken, what shades it through the year, and whether planning will let you use the slope that faces the sun. None of that is visible from a postcode, which is why we survey before quoting and why we tell some people not to bother.

Across South London the pattern is reasonably clear. The interwar suburbs of Bexley, Bromley, Sutton and outer Croydon have the best roofs in the region: large, unbroken, uniformly pitched and mostly outside conservation areas. The inner Victorian boroughs of Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark and Lambeth have the hardest, because the roofs are narrow and broken by chimney stacks and dormers and because conservation area coverage frequently rules out the productive slope. Wimbledon, Dulwich and Richmond sit in between: excellent roof area, heavy planning restriction, and high enough consumption to make storage genuinely pay.

Interwar Suburbs: The Best Roofs

Bexley, Bromley, Sutton and outer Croydon. Large unbroken rear slopes, uniform pitch, usually one chimney, frequently facing south to west, and mostly outside conservation areas. Somewhere sensible for a battery in a garage or utility space. If you live in one of these, solar is very likely worth doing and the survey is mostly about sizing rather than feasibility.

Inner Victorian Terraces: The Hardest

Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark, Lambeth and inner Wandsworth. Narrow roofs broken by chimney stacks and loft dormers, and conservation area coverage that bars panels on any slope fronting a highway. Whether it works often comes down to which way the terrace runs. We will tell you when the answer is no rather than selling you an array that will disappoint for twenty-five years.

Large Period Houses: Restricted but Worth It

Wimbledon, Dulwich, Richmond and Blackheath. Substantial roof area and heavy conservation area coverage, so the front slope is usually unavailable, but the rear slope alone is often big enough to matter. High household consumption makes these the strongest battery cases in the region, and mature trees make shading analysis worth doing properly.

Flats and Blocks: Usually a Freeholder Question

The Peninsula, Kidbrooke, Woolwich, Nine Elms and the converted stock across the inner boroughs. The roof is normally common parts belonging to the freeholder rather than demised to any flat, so an individual leaseholder has nothing to install on. A building-wide scheme promoted by the freeholder or residents' management company is a different and workable proposition.

Is my South London roof suitable for solar?

Start earlier than you think you need to.
Can you fit solar and a battery to a system you did not install?
